IT’S HERE! INTRODUCING THE NEXT VERSION OF THE BLOOMBERG ANYWHERE IPAD APP

Only a few weeks ago we wrote about how the Apple iPad has revolutionized the way in which people interact with information – and that Bloomberg has been there from the beginning.

Today we are proud to officially unveil the next version of the Bloomberg Anywhere app for iPad.  We believe the redesigned app will take accessing financial information on a mobile platform to a new level of sophistication with its enhanced navigation and added features straight from the Bloomberg Professional service.

Our latest iPad app release is yet another example of Bloomberg’s drive for innovation as we provide subscribers with leading technology they can access wherever and whenever. Bloomberg has been providing mobile access to the most trusted source of data, news and analytics for more than 20 years and continues to deliver the mobility users require in a fast-moving, global market.

By having our “user experience” design team work directly with our customers to test the app’s design elements and capabilities, and listening to subscribers’ feedback, we have developed additions that focus on three specific areas:

1)  enhanced customization and navigation, so users can easily access relevant news and market information

2)  better offline capabilities, so they can read and access important information while in-flight

3)  and added features, including Instant Bloomberg, Bloomberg Industries and enhanced charting capabilities

The tight integration and collaboration between our R&D and design teams, as well as our customers is what makes us so excited about this latest release.

We have seen – over the past three years – the number of subscribers accessing our platform on a mobile device double and more than half access the platform via multiple devices.

Bloomberg Anywhere was created with this in mind – and as the computing habits of our subscribers (current and future) evolves, we will continue to evolve alongside them to deliver the information and services they need and expect – anywhere, anytime.

For Bloomberg Professional service subscribers who want to download the new app can do so for free at the App Store.

“Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, Please”

Charlie Pellett is a veteran news anchor and reporter for Bloomberg Radio. He is also the voice of the New York City subway system. We sat down with Charlie recently to find out more about how this transpired. Below are some edited excerpts from the interview; for the full transcript click HERE

CHARLIE PELLETT |  ”What an honor to be able to say, ‘Stand clear of the closing doors, please.’  To be able to say it every single day to millions of New Yorkers….I love New York City trains.  I love the subways.  When I first came to New York, I wanted a job as a subway motorman.  I applied, but they wouldn’t take me on a part-time basis.  I wanted to be in broadcasting part time and drive subway trains.  So 20 years later, to be the “Stand clear of the closing doors” guy, that’s pretty cool.”

CHARLIE PELLETT|  ”Two former co-workers had the idea.  They talked to somebody who talked to somebody else.  Bottom line is, somebody at the Transit Authority, which is what it was called at the time said, ‘You know what?  Can you send us over some samples of who you’ve got?  And we’ll figure out if we can use it in our brand news trains that were coming out.’”

CHARLIE PELLETT|  ”Funny story.  I was riding the train one day and there was (BACKGROUND VOICE) an announcement that had played a couple of times.  ’Stand clear of the closing doors, please.’  ’Stand clear of the closing doors, please.’  And there was a wise guy kid sitting there saying, ‘Shut up, Mr. North Dakota.’  And I’m thinking, ‘Mr. North Dakota?’  Now, I’ve lived in Brooklyn for 25 years.  I assure you, I am not from North Dakota. I wanted to say something, but I bit my tongue.”

Bloomberg Installs EV Charging Stations and Joins DOE’s Charging Challenge

Bloomberg recently announced that we installed electric car charging stations at our Skillman campus, just one of the ways we are trying to make it easier for employees to reduce their environmental impact. The electric car charging stations are meant to encourage employees to switch to alternative fueled vehicles.

Additionally, to show our continued support Bloomberg LP has joined the Energy Department’s Workplace Charging Challenge, which aims to expand the availability of workplace charging for American workers – increasing the convenience of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and providing drivers with more options.

In a release announcing Bloomberg LP as a participant, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said, “The market for energy-efficient and electric vehicles is expanding dramatically, giving drivers and businesses more options to save money on fuel while reducing carbon pollution. These American companies are taking strong steps to make their operations smarter and more fuel-efficient – setting an example for others to follow and helping America lead the global race for a growing industry.”

Bloomberg Brings Twitter’s Buzz to the Trading Desk with TWTR

When the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media venues to communicate company announcements, social media reached a new level of acceptance – and importance to traders and investors in the financial community.

Two days after the SEC’s decision, Bloomberg announced TWTR, a new feature that enables Bloomberg Professional service subscribers to monitor buzz-worthy updates about the financial markets and their portfolio companies.

Traders and investors with access to a Bloomberg terminal can use TWTR to build a search filter for updates from Twitter (or tweets). Users can filter content from Twitter by company, ticker, industry, authors (or people) and Bloomberg-recommended markets and topics. Filters offer controls to manage tweet volume, so users can narrow their search parameters to those tweets that are most relevant.

Bloomberg pre-selected several thousand Twitter handles of companies and authors that report market moving or breaking news about the financial markets, companies, securities, or industries, and we are refining the list constantly with input from clients. We also created Social Velocity Alerts to capture when there is an unusual burst of social chatter around a given stock.

One of the hallmarks of the Bloomberg Professional service is that it provides direct access to original source material along-side our own market moving news, data and analytical tools. The integration of Twitter feeds signifies how social media has grown in value as a distribution channel for financial information. We hope Bloomberg subscribers enjoy using TWTR and look forward to hearing from them about the platform.

Coming Soon: The Next Version of the Bloomberg Anywhere App for iPad

The Apple iPad has revolutionized the way in which people interact with information – and Bloomberg has been there from the beginning.

As the iPad evolves so too will our app.  Today, we offer subscribers real-time and historical pricing from the world’s major exchanges; we provide news and research from thousands of sources; and, we offer access to Bloomberg’s proprietary e-mail community.

The formal release of our next enhancement is coming soon, with features that will take access to financial information on a mobile platform to a new level of sophistication.

Because our subscribers have always been integral to the development and user experience of the Bloomberg platform, we want to invite (and encourage) our Bloomberg Anywhere subscribers to take a sneak peek at this new effort and provide us feedback. Simply type PREVIEW in the command line of the application and give it a whirl.

As for the formal release, it is coming soon. So please stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
